AFTON, N.Y. – It’s time to come home.
The Afton Fairgrounds Speedway is returning to its roots for the 2024 racing season. The third mile facility will return to weekly Friday night competition under new management.
In the last few days, the Spoonhower family, who currently operate Thunder Mountain Speedway, have agreed to a contract with the Afton Fair Board to lease the facility for the upcoming season.
“We were presented with the opportunity to run Afton, so we decided to take it,” said the patriarch of the Spoonhower family, Karl Sr. “We wanted to get another track on board to work together and to help things in the Southern Tier get on the same page. Taking over Afton allows us to do that.”
With the promoter change comes one major change: tire rules. For the upcoming season, Afton Fairgrounds Speedway is switching to Hoosier Tires to allow the speedway to be on the same tires as Thunder Mountain Speedway. All other track rules will follow the Thunder Mountain Speedway rule book, allowing drivers to run Friday and Saturday nights in the Southern Tier just 45 minutes apart with the same rules package.
“We are really excited to have Afton on the Hoosier tire package,” said Spoonhower. “Drivers will have a grace period to use up their old American Racers, and then we’ll switch over to the Hoosiers. We’ve had very little tire wear at Thunder Mountain, and we hope to get Afton on the same page to save drivers money, so they won’t have to buy a ton of tires to compete at both tracks every week.”
